British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.
The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several approach shafts leading to the site... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
Daesh - referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This operation shows our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.
UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I must thank every member of British forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were among a great many UK service members on duty over the festive period. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our safety, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."
In December, the American forces executed what it called a "massive strike" against IS targets in Syria, after an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The UN says Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
